Social media marketing. Whether you love it or hate it, you know it’s an essential part of growing your practice and reaching more patients or clients.

So many of the incredible chiropractors and wellness practitioners I meet and work with are afraid to show their faces on Instagram, avoid getting on stories, and don’t want to deal with the trolls, negative comments, and judgment that can happen when we put ourselves out there.

It’s 100% understandable. But the truth is that you’re not going to reach your growth goals or increase your impact without overcoming your social media anxiety and showing up on Instagram.

The fear and anxiety around social media is real. So instead of just telling you to get over it, I’ve invited certified health and life coach, Chelsea Haines, to share her proven technique for moving past social media anxiety and how she personally doubled her Instagram following in just 8 weeks!

Let’s see how she did it and learn how we can apply her knowledge and experience in our own businesses.

Why do we have social media anxiety?

As humans, we want to be safe, loved, and accepted. Rude comments, judgment, and straight up trolls are a threat to our stability and safety.

Our brains want to protect us from these things – which often leads to minor (or major) social media anxiety.

If you’ve experienced some degree of growth on social media, only to have it stall or decline, it can also feel like you’re “failing” or “bad” at this whole Instagram thing. Again, an understandable response.

You’re proud of the work you do, and you know how life-changing and powerful your services are. So it’s normal to be afraid of subjecting your skills, expertise, and services to external judgment and comments.

Growing your Instagram

One of the best ways to overcome your fear or reluctance around using social media to market your business is simply to do it more.

Chelsea has 3 tips for showing up intentionally on Instagram so you can actually grow your account:

  1. Set your nervous system: Prepare for the influx of followers, comments, likes, and DMs you will see as you grow before you get there. Make a mindset shift now to focus on the positive aspects of growth and don’t let your fear of success hold you back from what’s possible.
  2. Create more than you consume: If you take in more content than you create, Instagram won’t see your account as a creator. That means they’re less likely to share your content with more people. Start simple – get inspired by the latest trends, focus on what your audience likes, and create content you enjoy! Creating more than you consume will also help keep your mindset focused on what you can control and less on the “algorithm” everyone worries about.
  3. Engage: It’s called social media because it’s meant to be a two-way exchange! Chelsea saw great success using our Engagement Checklist to keep her focused on purposeful engagement instead of falling into a habit of useless scrolling.

Following those three tips, Chelsea grew her account from 10k to 22k followers in just eight weeks! Imagine where you could be two months from now if you started doing these things consistently today.

Don’t let social media anxiety hold you back

You’ve got the tips and you understand where your social media anxiety comes from… but how are you supposed to implement the things you know will help you when you’re still concerned with internet trolls, external judgment, and rude comments?

Chelsea gave us the lowdown on how to overcome social media anxiety and feel confident (and maybe even excited) about consistently marketing on Instagram.

  • Acknowledge your brain

Go ahead and recognize your feelings around social media. Tell your brain “thank you!” for trying to protect you and acknowledge the subconscious threats you’re perceiving.

  • Decide on your response approach

You can’t control the internet haters, but you can control how you respond! Instead of always having to “be the bigger person,” embrace the energy of your detractors.

Chelsea found it helped her social media anxiety to respond with a light-hearted, energetic energy that didn’t feel negative, combative, or defensive.

She replied to rude comments with things like:

“Thanks for boosting the algorithm for me!”

Or

“Here’s a resource that may help you: BetterHelp.com”

Figuring out how you can respond without fear, shame, or anger is a major game-changer. You don’t have to ignore rude comments – you can call them out for what they are… and have a little fun in the process.
